Indigenous Peoples Month

The Philippines has a "Indigenous Peoples Month" to celebrate and enhance the country's richness in culture, heritage, and their contributions. This year's theme for the month, *Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan at Parangalana* (Valuing, Nurturing, and Honoring Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Knowledge), marks the celebration of the **27th Anniversary of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA)**. Enacted in 1997, the IPRA protects the rights of Indigenous Peoples over ancestral domains, cultural integrity, and the right to self-determination as stewards of traditions and biodiversity. This year's celebration manifests the continued need to protect these communities from cultural erosion and exploitation and affirms the commitment of the country towards justice and equal rights for IPs.

The observance is also part of the distribution and promotion of knowledge concerning the contribution of Indigenous Peoples to society, not to mention their deep knowledge in sustainable living and environmental conservation. Other events such as cultural performances, educational forums, and exhibits opened up meaningful opportunities for engagement between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, sparking awareness and respect for one another. These efforts are also aimed at avoiding discrimination and exclusion because they enhance inclusiveness by strengthening the indigenous people to design and express their uniqueness in a modernizing world.

This year's theme encourages Filipinos to act together in advancing the cause of indigenous knowledge, building up indigenous communities, and working with contributions made by the indigenous peoples. Celebrated, the protection of the rights of Indigenous Peoples is not solely the responsibility of the State. And by advocating for policies that are inclusive respecting the ancestral domains of our Indigenous peoples and amplifying their voices, the vibrant heritage will be there thriving for generations to come. As the Philippines today observes Indigenous Peoples Month 2024, let us strengthen our commitment to building a nation worthy of the multicolored cultural roots we have.
